The Cycamera system is Cyprus's automated traffic light enforcement technology that uses LIDAR sensors to detect violations. Here's exactly how it operates:
Key Rules and Scenarios
No Fine for Legal Entry
If you cross the stop line while the light is green or yellow and then get stuck in the intersection due to oncoming traffic, you won't be fined. The camera system activates once the light turns red, but it doesn't penalize drivers who entered the intersection legally before the red light.
Fine for Red Light Violation
If you enter the intersection after the light has turned red, the camera will capture this violation. The standard fine for running a red light is €300, along with 3 penalty points on your driving license.
Extended Grace Period for Turns
Previously, there was a 3-second grace period after the green arrow for turning elapsed. This has been extended to 4 seconds, allowing drivers a bit more time to complete their turn before being penalized.
Lesser Violations and Reduced Fines
Not all violations carry the same penalty. The system recognizes different levels of infractions:
Partial Stop Line Violation
If one axle is over the stop line while the other remains behind it, you may receive a reduced fine.
Pedestrian Crossing Obstruction
Blocking a pedestrian crossing results in additional penalties as it endangers pedestrian safety.
Bicycle Area Obstruction
Stopping in designated bicycle areas carries specific fines to protect cyclist safety.
